Allow me to introduce you to my current obsession in my Downtown Oshkosh studio:

Neon Alley.

If you’re a fan of vibrant colors and black light glow, Neon Alley is probably right up your alley.  The neon signs create an amazing array of hue and light, and I just.can’t.get.enough.  When I say I’m obsession, I mean I am obsessessed.

Boudoir Session Inspiration

I’ve known ever since I opened my first studio here in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, that I wanted a neon wall or area all my own.  The glow of neon signs and the melding of colors speaks to my artsy and creative soul in a way that I don’t know how to describe.

The inspiration for my little Neon Alley isn’t hard to find: back in the city we lived in in Colorado, there’s a very unique local attraction in the downtown that is known as Neon Alley.  The name is much more fitting in that case.  Pueblo, Colorado’s Neon Alley is a literal alley spanning a couple of city blocks with several businesses on either side, and wired all over up and down that alley are neon signs of all styles and sizes, from well-known restaurants, to random winged horses, to an extremely large Hollywood sign.  It’s really no surprise that it’s a huge destination for all manner of portraits.  (Although I’ll admit boudoir would have been a challenge, since it’s a public place.)

It was one of my favorite places to photograph in, and was one of the things I missed when we moved.

Bringing Neon Alley to the Fox Valley

After a visit back to Colorado this summer and re-visiting Neon Alley, I was determined to make my dream of a neon space in my own studio a reality.

Once we returned home to Wisconsin, we set out to work.  My husband, who is very handy and a much better builder than I am, helped me fix up an unused space in the studio basement to bring my vision to life of an “alley” with neon signs and a white brick wall.  The vinyl records on the walls were my own little idea, and I’ll admit I’m kind of impressed with how they reflect the lights from the signs when lit up.

All-in-all, it took about a week of set up to bring my own little slice of Neon Alley to the Fox Valley for all of my boudoir sessions to enjoy, and I couldn’t be happier with the results!
